It is right that Esperanto has not became a "lingua franca" as english. There are a lot of reasons for it: most of very powerfull countries have no interests to promote a fair and neutral language, they prefer promote their own language. In most of countries of the world, Esperanto cannot be taught to children in the educational systems, for irrational reasons...and during the 20th century, esperantists have been persecuted by Hitler and Stalin (Zamenhof was jew, and it's a cosmopolitan language) . But today Esperanto is the only made language which is really living. And one century is a very young age for a language! Mon Feb 7, 2005 9:54 am MST by W?ng
Thanks for the comments. It does make sense to me that something like Esperanto should become the universal language. However, hasn't it been out for about 100 years? It has never been able to grow much (at least from my perspective). My guess is that language is a very cultural and family oriented tool. And that's why Esperanto hasn't become more popular. Any ideas? Any blogs on learning Esparanto out there? Thu Feb 3, 2005 6:27 am MST by Paul
English cannot be the universal language, since it is a very hard language to learn (I speak pidgin-english and I have bigs difficulties to follow a native speker, because I don't live in a english speaking country), and it is the language of one culture. 6% of the world population are native speakers of English. Are they more equal than the others? Learning english costs a lot for 94% of the world. You should search on the web more informations about esperanto, but I can say that it is a spoken language, very concise, precise (english:by reducing gases...from occuped territories...lol), phonetic, and 10* easier to learn than any ather language.
