News about public breastfeeding
Last Thursday, June 9, was a nurse-in in downtown Grand Rapids. It was prompted by an incident involving Micah and me (Jenn) at the county clerk's office while I was applying for birth certificates. I was nursing Micah when the clerk approached me and asked me to "cover up with a blanket or go down to the lobby to do that."

Good for you, Jenn, for feeding your baby and for standing up for motherhood with the nurse-in. Mother's milk is liquid gold. There is nothing in a store-bought can that even comes close to its goodness: health, attachment, responsiveness. Mothers are busy people; if we can't nurse on the go when the baby needs it, then we can't nurse; its too much work, the milik dries up. The needs of the baby come first, not nosy observers. It is totally possible to nurse modestly inpublic. I nursed for 7 years total with my children and showed less skin than many women in their contemporary fashions, less skin than every other magazine cover at the grocery store checkout. If people have a problem with exposure, start with the media and the mall, leave the hungry babies alone. I am very disappointed with Martin Kelly's comment to you. I would have thought from his quaker ranter website that he'd be more tolerant. So keep up the nursing; extended nursing is great too. The little ones grow up fast and its a special time to nurse them as younglings.

I am a nursing mum - and I aplaud your efforts to create more awareness of this very natural means of feeding our children. IF you had been wearing hip huggers baring your waist and a tight t shirt that was so tight you could see the nipples - I bet the same clerk would not have asked you to leave and come back in more suitable clothing - would she? What hypocrisy!
